Özet:
Signalized pedestrian crossings with pedestrian buttons have been actively used in
developing and developed countries for the last fifteen years. With the increasing use
of it, there are differences between the buttonless signalized pedestrian crossings and
the effects on both pedestrians and vehicles. This situation can have effects on
pedestrian speed, pedestrian delay, pedestrian crossing tendencies, vehicle delays and
thus road efficiency. In this study, first of all, pedestrian data in signalized pedestrian
crossings with and without buttons were examined , then the effect of pedestrian
warning traffic lights on arterial performance in coordinated light arteries was
examined.
In this thesis, video camera footages made in Konak and Karşıyaka districts of
İzmir province were examined. Pedestrian crossing speeds, speeds through which
fifteen percent and eighty-five percent of pedestrians pass, pedestrian delays and
regular crossing behaviors were evaluated separately on the basis of gender, crossing
alone or as a group, age group and load status parameters. Afterwards, a coordinated
light artery simulation was created in SIDRA Intersection program developed by
Akçelik in Australia, and the effects of pedestrian warning traffic lights on arterial
performance were examined.
Within the scope of the thesis study, it was observed that gender, crossing alone or
as a group, age group and load status parameters had different effects on pedestrian
crossing speeds, speeds at which fifteen percent and eighty-five percent of pedestrians
pass, pedestrian delays and regular crossing behaviors. The effect of warning traffic
lights and button activation rate on arterial performance couldn’t be revealed.
