Özet:
The main objective of this study was to investigate the impact of the AI’s capabilities on the employees from a social identity theory perspective within the organization. In this respect, this study considers routine and non-routine task oriented AI activities and suggests that non-routine task oriented AI will increase occupational identity threat perceptions of employees. Adding that the elevation in the level of occupational identity threat expands towards influencing organizational perceptions, specifically organization-based self-esteem and organizational identification decrease. Two experimental vignette studies were conducted to test the study hypotheses. Both studies supported the hypothesis that non-routine task oriented AI in the workplace increases occupational identity threat. A significant relationship was found between occupational identity threat and organization-based self-esteem. Occupational identity threat was found to mediate the relationship between the vignette and organization-based self-esteem and this relationship was also correlated without the mediation effect of occupational identity threat. However, none of the predictors were found to be significantly related to organizational identification. The findings suggest that while AI is a transformative technology for the organizations, it also poses a threat to employees’ occupational identity and self-esteem. Future studies should be conducted considering the limitations. This study contributes to identity literature as well as AI studies in social context.
