Özet

In this paper, innovations encountered in the tunnel support driven by conventional methods rather than using TBM's have been discussed on the basis of the New Italian Tunnelling Method which has been applied in tunnel support during the past century and at the beginning of the 21st century. The development procedure of the New Italian Method and its application in Izmir metroBornova tunnel construction forms the main theme of the paper. In the first part, the self support of rocks in underground openings has been mentioned, and then the progress towards the New Italian Method since the use of passive support in the late years of the 19th century and in the early years of the 20th century has been summarized. In the final part, the application of the New Italian Method in Izmir metro has been explained profoundly.
