All Rights Reserved.Purpose: To evaluate the effect of lens status after pars plana vitrectomy on postoperative results of patients underwent pars plana vitrectomy for vitreous hemorrhage due to diabetes mellitus. Materials and Methods: Records of the patiens who underwent pars plana vitrectomy for vitreous hemorrhage due to diabetes mellitus were studied retrospectively. Twenty-one patients who were phakic before pars plana vitrectomy were accepted as group1, 17 patients who were non-phakic before pars plana vitrectomy were accepted as group 2. Groups were compared based on age, gender, mean follow-up time, final visual acuity, intraoperative complications, improvement in visual acuity, postoperative anterior and posterior complications, reoperation rate and anatomic success. Results: There was no difference between groups regarding age, gender and mean follow-up time. Intraoperative complications occurred in 2 patients (9.1%) of group 1, and 1 patient (5.8%) of group 2. Postoperative complications was seen in 3 patients (13.6%) of group 1, and 2 patients (11.7%) of group 2. Anterior segment complications developed in 5 patients (23.8%) in group1 and 6 patients (29.4%) in group 2. Improvement of visual acuity was achieved in 17 patients (77.8%) of group 1 and 14 patients (82.3%) of group 2 (p=0.624). Reoperation was performed in 2 patients (9.5%) of group 1 and 2 patients (11.7%) of group 2. Conclusion: There was no significant effect of lens status on postoperative results in patients had pars plana vitrectomy surgery for vitreous hemorrhage due to diabetes mellitus.
