Fabric hand is directly related to the interactions
between skin contact and mostly determined by the mechanical, surface and
structural properties of fabrics. In this study, several properties of denim
fabrics which are known to be related with fabric hand were investigated by
objective measurements and ring method as well. The main objective was to
determine the relations between test results of
ring method and thickness, compression ability, extension ability,
bending rigidity, shear rigidity, and surface properties. For this purpose, 17
commercially available denim fabrics with various production parameters were
examined. Statistical evaluations showed that the results obtained by ring
method have significantly high correlation coefficients especially with biaxial
mechanical properties such as in-plane shear behaviour (r > 0.70; p <
0.01) and bending rigidity in diagonal directions (r > 0.90; p < 0.01).
The correlation coefficients between several surface roughness parameters and
ring method results were also significant. These findings proved that ring
method can be used for denim fabrics to obtain an overall estimation regarding
the parameters which are known to be relevant to the tactile comfort.
