The effect of occupational health and safety literacy on job performance: a case study on Turkish basic metal industry

Özet
In Turkey, following the enactment of Occupational Health and Safety Law No. 6331 in 2012, it has been observed that 22.324 people lost their lives due to occupational accidents and diseases between July 2012 and September 2024. According to the 2023 data from the Social Security Institution (SGK), the metal sector in Turkey consists of 103.680 workplaces and employs 1.510.698 workers. In this sector, 9.671 out of every 100.000 employees experience occupational accidents, while the fatality rate resulting from these accidents is 13.6 per 100.000 workers. A review of the literature indicates that various scale development and adaptation studies have been conducted on occupational health and safety (OHS) literacy. However, research on the OHS literacy levels of bluecollar workers employed in the basic metal industry and the impact of these levels on job performance remains quite limited. This study aims to fill this gap, focusing on & Idot;zmir, Turkey's second-largest city in terms of the number of employees in the basic metal industry. A survey method was employed as the data collection tool, and a general survey model was applied within the framework of quantitative research methods. The findings of the study reveal that OHS literacy is at a high level in Turkey's basic metal industry and that a high level of OHS literacy has a significantly positive impact on job performance.
