Introduction Introduction: Serious games are providing interactive digital experiences that can enhance knowledge retention and refine clinical decision-making skills. As part of the ERASMUS+ Grant for the Genes4All project, a Serious Game was designed by clinical geneticists, genetic counsellors and experts working in the field of neurodegenerative disease from five European countries. Our objective was to create a serious game to prepare family members for a genetic counselling appointment by introducing them to topics relating to genetics, counselling, family history and neurodegenerative conditions. The game can also be used to help medical professionals and students understand the process of genetic counselling better. Methods Methods: The Genes4All team wrote a script including the most important topics encountered in genetic counselling for neurodegenerative conditions. A Serious Game was designed by the video game designers CHALLEDU guiding a digital patient through different scenarios which confront them with the meaning of genetics, the process of counselling and the symptoms and development of a wide array of genetic neurodegenerative adult conditions. Results Results: The game was successfully designed and piloted by family members of patients with neurodegenerative conditions and medical professionals in all five participating countries (n=25). The review of the early piloting data found the game to be largely user friendly and informative. The game is now being translated into the languages before larger piloting can go ahead. Conclusion Conclusion: A Serious Game in preparation for a genetic counselling appointment is an innovative and informative tool that could help patients feel more prepared and informed prior to their appointment and make the counselling process easier and smoother. Further piloting is necessary to see this game’s practical utility.
