Abstract

This study aims to unveil the socio-demographic characteristics of youth in Türkiye by considering the heterogeneous structure of NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training). The labour market behavior, encompassing variables such as those employed in formal education, unemployed, and inactive NEETs, serves as a nominal dependent variable, suggesting the estimation of multinomial choice models. The status of youth in NEET is analyzed using pooled data from the 2014–2020 Household Labour Force Survey (HLFS), employing a multinomial probit model (MNPM). Analyses reveal that prolonged economic instability, alongside Türkiye's jobless growth and the expansion of education, contributes to the increase in the NEET situation.
