Remembering and Living: Intergenerational Life Stories of Levantines from Izmir
The research focuses on examining the relationship between collective memory and urban space in terms of political, economic, and cultural dimensions throughout producing memory. The study aims to reveal how memory is built through the sample of the Levantine community from Izmir, whether there is a change in memory transfer between generations, the dimensions of belonging, urban space use and memory production of a group that has lived in a certain geography for generations. The sample has a stratified structure within itself as well as having different languages, religions, customs, and traditions from the dominant culture. As to whether a change between generations is very important in terms of understanding the characteristics of this community, which represent a cultural identity through its interactions with the city they live in and with other communities, in time. To define the identification mechanisms, ways of remembering and transmitting, and the factors affecting all these of the Levantine community and its dynamics, the most appropriate method would be the qualitative method. Therefore, instead of starting from theory, it would be more rewarding to make a theory connection in the light of data obtained by using grounded theory. Technically, in-depth interview and participant observation will be used within the scope of oral history. In-depth interviews will be held with community members from the same family for 3 generations. Intergenerational interviews are an important part of the research, as they enable both how in-group memory is shaped and intergenerational comparisons.
