Effets of PAC-Modified Clay Exposure on Egestion, Egg Production and Egg Hactching Success of Paracartia grani (Calanoida, Copepoda)

Abstract
Modified clay compounds are widely used to mitigate harmful algal blooms, but their effects on copepods remain unclear. We conducted laboratory experiments to evaluate the short-term effects of MCII, a polyaluminum chloride (PAC)-modified clay, on the calanoid copepod Paracartia grani, focusing on feeding, reproduction, and fecal pellet production. No significant effects were observed on feeding rate, egg production, or hatching success. However, fecal pellet length and volume increased in MCII-treated groups, indicating the ingestion of modified clay particles. Longer-term and field-based studies are needed to fully assess the ecophysiological impacts of MCII on copepods.
