A common element in an engine exhaust system is a pipe carrying mean flow in the presence of a temperature gradient. The transmission of plane harmonic sound waves in such a pipe is considered by several authors. In this paper a general matrizant formulation and two approximate analytical solutions, both valid for any form of temperature distribution, are presented for the first time. The approximation underlying one of the analytical solutions is justified by the matrizant analysis. A scattering matrix is derived for the case of linear temperature gradient and compared with the corresponding matrizant. (C) 1996 Academic Press Limited
