ABSTRACT
WAIST ACCESSORIES USED IN TURKISH GARMENT CULTURE
Waist accessories have become irreplaceable with their symbolic, decorative and functional aspects in Turkish garment culture. In Turkish societies, belts and waistbands have gained an important presence in male and female clothing for aesthetical and functional purposes; functional purposes like fixing up the outwear, holding the skeleton straight; carrying and preserving tools; aesthetical for ornaments reflecting personal likes; statute revealing social class and wealth like power and rank; symbolical for bearing symbols like luck, wealth and abundance.
Belt was a sovereignty symbol in Old Turks. Due to its area of use, purpose, materials and production techniques it has also been referred as kur, suf, uçkur-tizme, waist belt, strap, belt and waist band. Buckle belts were usually produced with gemstones and precious metals like gold, silver, bronze and jade; waist bands were generally knitted with worst and sometimes used by wrapping a leather waistband around. Ceremonies for clothing the teenage boys who reached their adolescences with waistband became a tradition in Turkish garment culture.
Complementary elements of Turkish clothes culture, the belt accessories will be approached with their functional and symbolic values.
