Abstract

In organizations, mobbing causes important personal, social and psychological problems, and it affects the daily lives and careers of the employees. Mobbing is a period of informal and negative behavior such as wearing away at, demoralizing, insulting and discrediting, which one or more employees apply to one or more employees in organizations. With this study, it is aimed to examine the perceptions of academicians on mobbing at universities. This study is prepared in the model of descriptive survey and with quantitative research method. The population of the study consists of academicians working at Dokuz Eylul University on 2011-2012 academic terms. The sample, which consists of 1261 academicians working at thirteen faculties, is determined by stratified and simple random sampling method. "The Scale of Mobbing at Workplaces" has been used as the data collection instrument in this research. Frequency, percentage, average have been calculated through the statistical analysis of the survey data. In comparing the groups the Independent Samples t test, one-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were used. The results show that academicians have been exposed to mobbing behaviors in the level of hardly ever. Female, single, younger academicians (under 40-year-old) and research assistances and academic specalists have been subjected of mobbing more than other groups. Mobbing has been experienced most in the faculties of Nursing, Maritime and Theology, and least in the faculties of Architecture, Engineering and Science, respectively. Whereas mobbing is more experienced in big organizations according to the other studies, this study draws attention to the fact that in the faculties with the fewest academicians, it is more experienced. Whether this is special to universities or not, and its reasons should be researched, policy makers and practitioners should take precautions on this subject.
