Abstract

In this study was conducted immunohistochemical analyze of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the endothelial cells of umbilical vein, for comparing these findings with pregnancy outcome as well as with Doppler study results. Participants were divided into two groups: the first group included 50 pregnant women who gave birth via normal vaginal delivery and the control group included 46 pregnant women without any pathology and with normal body weight who undergone Cesarean section for obstetrical indications. Women in the normal delivery group had higher levels of VEGF when compared to control group (9,39±3,11 and 5,05±2,68, respectively). During normal delivery process a hypoxic environment develops and, as the result, VEGF levels in the endothelial cells of fetal circulatory system begin to rise which probably is a protective mechanism of fetal organism.
