Caudal epidural anaesthesia has become widely accepted as a means of providing postoperative pain relief and intraoperative supplementation to general anaesthaesia for children. Clonidine, an alpha 2 agonist has been used effectively for the treatment of acute and chronic pain. To assess its efficacy in caudal epidural anaesthesia in children, we randomized 40 children aged 2-8 yr. undergoing subumblical surgery into two groups to receive 1 mL/kg % 0.25 bupivacain (n=20) or clonidine 1 (g/kg) combined with saline (n=20) to a volume of 1 mL/kg. Postoperative analgesia was evaluated by using the rating scale and determining the time to first analgesic requirement. There was no difference in the efficacy of caudal analgesia in children between the two groups.
