Air Quality Protection Regulation (AQPR) is in force in Turkey since 1986. But, no standards, guidelines and regulations exist for control of odor problems in this legislation of Turkey. Moreover, there are odor complaints in the residential and industrial areas as well as at the tourist sites of Turkey. It was recorded by the national and local environmental authorities that most of the complaints from environmental pollution is based on "malodorous" water bodies, wastewater discharges, solid wastes or emissions. But specific legislative procedure for their handling, management and treatment does not exist. Therefore, this problem should be adequately addressed. The basic goal of the project mentioned in this presentation is to develop a management policy in Turkey for odorous emissions and immissions which is in line with the specific objective of the Life Third Countries Program. This necessitates preparing the Turkish Guidelines for odor measurements. Building an infrastructure in Turkey to have a sustainable application and enforcement of the new "National Odor Control Regulation" is also included among the objectives of the project. As an outcome of this project, Clean Air Act of Turkey will include a new "Regulation" concerning odorous emissions and immissions. This presentation explains the different phases of the project, how the problems were tackled and what experiences were gained through the implementation of the project.
