Abstract

The Global Heat Flow Database (GHFDB) of the International Heat Flow Commission (IHFC) is under systematic evaluation to ensure

its accuracy and usability for the scientific community since 2021. We present a new quality-controlled heat flow dataset for Europe,

which contributes to the newly compiled GHFDB. The database is structured according to the global standards on heat-flow metadata

scheme and quality evaluation framework developed by the IHFC. By integrating both modern and historical heat-flow measurements,

it provides a comprehensive dataset enriched with detailed metadata, essential for geothermal research. The quality assessment

follows a systematic approach based on three critical aspects of heat-flow data: methodological quality, numerical uncertainty, and

environmental site perturbations. These factors are combined into a single quality score, enabling data comparison and the easy identification

of missing or insufficient documentation. The European dataset includes over 22,000 heat-flow measurements collected

from 1939 to the present, with varying levels of data quality. The presented dataset is quality-controlled and allows refined definition

of datasets used for different scientific applications. We expected it to play a crucial role in geothermal energy exploration and research,

serving as a valuable resource for both scientists and industry professionals. This presentation will highlight advancements and challenges

of the European heat flow database.
