Özet
Shilandar is a rural settlement in Zanjan Province that exemplifies Iran’s vernacular domestic architecture, shaped by close interaction between local communities and the natural environment. The village's unique adaptation to steep topography, where rooftops serve as courtyards for upper houses alongside its compact rectangular houses with wooden balconies, reflects spatial intelligence and environmental harmony. However, this traditional architectural fabric is now at risk due to depopulation, weakened agricultural practices, lifestyle shifts, and the introduction of non-native materials. This study focuses on the architectural features and spatial organization of Shilandar to explore the challenges and opportunities for conserving rural heritage in Iran. Based on fieldwork, typological analysis, and interviews with locals, the research identifies key conservation needs and offers strategic recommendations. The findings highlight the importance of cultural continuity, community participation, and locally rooted planning in ensuring sustainable rural heritage conservation.
