Abstract

There is a contact aureole between blueschist and granodiorite in northwestern Turkey. This aureole contains some unique gem, purple jade, identified by the gemmo logical term turkiyenite. Here we report the results of our study of this unusual gem material. The principal constituent of the material is the mineral jadeite; however, it is multi-mineralic and also contains the minerals quartz, orthoclase, epidote, chloritoid, and phlogopite. Therefore, the term turkiyenite refers to a metamorphic rock and not a single mineral species. The complex interplay of the six different minerals presents give this purple jade a characteristic chemical and physical fingerprint. We note that it is distinct from two mono-mineralic purple gem materials, sugilite and charoite, with which it can be confused.
