Abstract

Graphene oxide (GO) is a material consisting of a carbon plane in the honeycomb structure and various oxygen-based functional groups attached to this plane. These oxygenated groups are responsible for many advantages over graphene, including higher solubility and the possibility for surface functionalization. Nowadays, GO has become quite remarkable among 2D nanostructures, it is possible to utilize graphene oxide structure in energy storage applications, sensors, supercapacitors, solar cells, photocatalytic and biomedical applications. Additionally, it is efficient and cost effective to synthesize graphene oxide structure compared to other graphene derivatives. Hummer's Method is the most suitable production method to obtain large quantities of GO. In this method, synthesis of GO from graphite involves the oxidation of graphite to GO, and afterwards washing and purification of GO from impurities.
These procedures are followed by application of drying process. In this study, GO is synthesized by Modified Hummer's Method and different drying conditions such as air drying (AD), oven drying (OD), vacuum desiccator drying (DD), vacuum drying (VD) and freezedrying (FD) are applied to obtain solid form GO. The final products are characterized structurally by X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and optically by Ultraviolet Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis) instruments.
Our results show that structural and optical differences found in the obtained GO structures according to the applied drying methods.
