Abstract

This study focuses on the design features of pontoon boats that have been examined considering their rapidly increasing market share in the global recreational boat industry of which the Unites States have a share of three-quarters. For this study, numerical hydrodynamic analyses were carried out through the basic design characteristics of a representative large pontoon boat with three cylindrical buoyancy elements, after a validation for the analyses had been performed by means of a Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) model. Further the cylindrical buoyancy elements were improved to optimize the hydrodynamic properties of a floating tubular hull, and those boats with new tubular form were reanalysed for resistance and turbulence viscosity: Finally: using the results obtained, powering requirements of these boats with typical characteristics of this segment, were estimated for service and maximum speeds, in order to directly compare the hydrodynamic performance of those boats with new buoyancy element forms.
