Abstract

This study examines the role of urban areas in developing sustainable food systems.

Current global challenges, including the rapid increase in urban populations, climate

change, food security issues, and food waste, involve the development of sustainable

food policies by local governments. This paper analyzes the Milan Urban

Food Policy Pact (MUFPP) as a key initiative in the development of sustainable

food systems and policies and evaluates the suggested approaches created at both

global and local levels. It investigates the actions taken by the member cities of

MUFPP concerning sustainable food production, distribution, and consumption

and examines the impact of these actions. This study analyzes Türkiye’s sustainable

food policies, national strategies, and MUFPP member municipalities' projects.

By examining Mezitli, Istanbul, Nilufer, Balıkesir, Efeler, Eregli, and Muratpasa

it reveals the current state of sustainable food policies. The study highlights local

government efforts, successful practices, and future improvement plans.
