A multivariable water resources microbial water quality variability index at quaternary catchment level is an essential tool in water resources planning. In this study a multi variable land use attribute index is developed and used to draw inferences on potential microbial water quality variation within 206 quaternary catchments. The index was developed based on three anthropogenic activities: agriculture, waste water effluent disposal and human settlements, with the intention of classifying quaternary catchments based on potential microbial water integrity variation. Main category index values are allocated based on theoretical microbial loads based on the three land use attributes. Sub categories for effluent disposal, human settlements and agriculture are developed based on the Green Drop criteria, population-catchment ratio and a weighted containment mean ratio between agriculture zone and catchment respectively. Ultimately a 3 variable 8 point microbial water quality variability index was used to classify quaternary catchments. The multivariable index technique can be used to evaluate vulnerability in a systematic manner to aid decision making in water resources management. The practical application of the technique in water resources management can be improved by targeted water quality sampling and spatial correlation. This is a vital essential step to improve water resource management and design of programmes to reduce deterioration of microbial water quality.
