Abstract
This article aims to make a visual analysis of the engravings depicting the ruins of Ephesus
from the perspective of 19th century travelers. Ephesus, an ancient Greek city on the Ionian coast,
has a rich history and architectural wonders and has attracted many travelers and scholars over the
centuries. In the 19th century, marked by the Romantic movement and increased interest in classical
antiquity, Ephesus became the focus of discovery and documentation.
In this study, a selection of engravings produced by travelers during their visits to Ephesus in
the 19th century are examined. By analyzing these visual representations, it aims to reveal the
dominant themes, artistic techniques and cultural perceptions embedded within the images. Through
a comparative approach, it aims to explain how different travelers described and interpreted the ruins
of Ephesus and to shed light on the evolving perceptions of this archaeological site in the 19th
century.
