International Workshop on Elasmobranches, Hatay, Türkiye, 05 Temmuz 2024
This study investigates the relationship between the total
length and body weight of the blackmouth catshark (Galeus melastomus) sampled from the Mediterranean coast of Türkiye,
specifically within the GFCM GSA24 in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, during August
and September 2023. A total of 336 individuals, 106 females and 230 males, were
caught using bottom trawl. The total length (TL) and body weight (W) of females
range from 17.6 to 54.2 cm and 15.5 to 630 g, respectively. For males, the
range is from 11.8 to 50.7 cm in length and from 13 to 426 g in weight. When
considering both sexes together, the range is from 11.8 to 54.2 cm in length
and from 13 to 630 g in weight. Male individuals have an average weight of
97.59 ± 6.35 g and a length of 275.92 ± 7.14 cm, while female individuals have
an average length of 281.40 ± 10.95 cm and a weight of 106.14 ± 10.84 g. The
average length of all individuals without sex separation is 280.89 ± 6.35 cm,
and the average weight is 105.72 ± 6.08 g. The number and size of females
sampled in the present study are slightly higher and bigger than those of
males. The Length-Weight (L-W) relationship is determined as W =
0,000001×TL3,13 (r2 = 0,98) for females, W = 0,000007×TL2,85 (r2 = 0,96) for
males, and W = 0,000004×TL2,94 (r2 = 0,97) for all individuals. The results
obtained from this study are expected to contribute to filling the knowledge
gap by highlighting the relationship between the length and weight of the
blackmouth catshark in the examined area. It will also enable comparisons with
future research on this particular species and other deep-sea locations in the
Mediterranean Sea.
