Özet

In the present study, a GIS based tool that includes the entire hydroelectric, thermal (gas, coal, and others), nuclear and wind power plants, the main transmission network and the major energy consumers was developed to determine the spatial center of the energy production facilities in Turkey. A rough calculation of the energy losses based on the spatial distribution of power plants and consumers becomes possible by this mentioned method. Currently, in Turkey, the majority of large hydroelectric power plants are situated in the eastern part, while the major energy consumption areas in the western part of the country. The major factors behind this controversial situation, the contradiction between the gravity centers of energy production and consumption centers, are economic, geographic and social factors. The distance between the gravity centers of these two parties, producers and consumers, is crucial in order to minimize the energy loss of electricity network. The tool is capable to provide valuable information to operators and planners in order to reduce energy losses, in both operational and planning phases of energy production facilities.
