Abstract

In this study, an elastic-plastic thermal stress analysis is carried out on a metal-matrix composite beam. Temperature is chosen to vary linearly along the sections of the beam. The beam is made of a stainless steel fiber aluminum metal-matrix composite. It has rigid smooth planes at the ends. The solution is found at 0 degrees, 30 degrees, 45 degrees, 60 degrees, and 90 degrees orientation angles. The intensity of the residual stress component of sigma (x) is maximized at the upper and lower surfaces of the beam and for an orientation angle of 0 degrees. In addition, the equivalent plastic strain is found to be greatest at the same orientation angle. Plastic yielding begins on the beam at higher orientation angles at lower temperatures.
