Özet

By offering an overview of the terracotta sarcophagi known from excavations and surveys in Anatolia, especially in central and eastern Cilicia, this article aims at revealing their value as archaeological documents. The catalogue, though not claiming to be comprehensive, includes in addition to the corpus of known pieces an important number of hitherto unpublished sarcophagi, mainly of Roman date, kept in local museums of Cilicia.

The aim of this catalogue raisonné is to place every sarcophagus in its proper cultural context so that it may function as a bearer of socio-historical information. Thus, an attempt has been made to identify specific workshops in Roman Cilicia and Anatolia. Yet, despite the use of quantitative methods, the results remain somewhat ambiguous and mainly confirm that Roman terracotta sarcophagi in the eastern Mediterranean exhibit an almost infinite variety in terms of both typology and decoration.
