Business practices led the
emergence of numerous environmental and social problems, which constitute the
major source of sustainability issues. Environmental degradation and social
problems have sparked the attention of scholars and practitioners to find
solutions for these problems. In contrast to conventional entrepreneurship in
which the core goal is economic gains, sustainable entrepreneurship has gained
an aspirational appeal in motivation to seek substantial solutions for
environmental and social problems. As a new conceptualization of
entrepreneurial activities, sustainable entrepreneurship reflects the
entrepreneurial efforts for exploring, developing, and exploiting opportunities
to promote sustainable development through environmental and social gains. In
this domain, entrepreneurs who start a venture to serve for societies’ interest
by tackling the facets of social and environmental issues are usually referred
to as sustainable entrepreneurs. Although there are ambiguities about the
conceptualization of sustainable entrepreneurship, the definition that reached
to the consensus reflects the consistency of sustainable development goals with
entrepreneurial activities. In line with this, Young and Tilley ( 2006) view sustainable entrepreneurs as
“the individuals who holistically integrate the goals of economic, social and
environmental entrepreneurship into an organization that is sustainable in its
goal and sustainable in its form of wealth generation” (Tilley and Young 2009, p. 88). Accordingly, sustainable
entrepreneurship is defined as exploration, creation, and exploitation of
opportunities with economic, social, and environmental gains. In conjunction
with this definition, sustainable entrepreneurs pursue profitable solutions for
sustainability issues including social and environmental goals through offering
more innovative and sustainable alternatives.
