Objective: To evaluate the rates and associated variables of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) use among the somatic treatments applied in a University Psychiatry Service in Turkey. Method: Subjects who are admitted to the inpatient unit of the Dokuz Eylul Medical School, Department of Psychiatry (DEMSDP) are evaluated for the ECT use between the years 2001-2003. Results: Among the 341 patients treated with a somatic treatment at the inpatient unit of the DEMS-DP; 56 (%16,4) have been treated with ECT. The ratio of ECT use to the psychopharmacologic intervetions has been found as 56/283(≅1/5.1). Among the 56 patients who have been treated with ECT, 6 patients have been readmitted to the inpatient unit of the DEMS-DP during the two years of the study. Accordingly, a relapse rate (based on the conviction assuming readmitted cases representing a population with a moderate to severe relapse) of about %10,7 was calculated. Conclusions: Electroconvulsive therapy remains one of the most effective treatments among the existing somatic treatments. This study provides an evidence for the efficacy of ECT by documenting the favorable frequency and response rates of ECT use in a university clinic in Turkey.
