Abstract

Izmir, the third largest city in Turkey, has environmental problems much like other metropolitan areas. One of Izmir's major problems is to control potable water supply and reuse of the treated wastewater since the water is limited resource. The Tahtali dam has a planned water capacity of 500000 m(3)/day. Its catchment is under threat of pollution caused by human, animal, agricultural activities and solid waste disposal. There have been many attempts to control pollution in the catchment but no effective solution is implemented. Although, water from the reservoir is treated with a classical treatment system (which consists of odour, taste and turbidity removal, oxygenation and disinfection) tertiary biochemical and chemical treatment is not undertaken. Precautions are necessary for pollution prevention in order to meet the terms of the Turkish Water Pollution Control and Environmental Impact Assessment Legislation. A plan for a model EIA Statement is offered.
