Soil pollution of
significantly reduces environmental quality and affects human health. Screening
and detecting soil and sediment pollution have become increasingly important
for adequate protection and remediation actions. The pollutants, in most cases,
are usually heavy metals, organic contaminants, and agricultural applications
such as chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and hormones. Also, ionizing
radiation and non-ionizing electromagnetic fields harm human health. This study
aims to trace the distribution and concentration of contaminants in soils and
the radiation effect around children's playgrounds in Konak. Magnetic
susceptibility, non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation, and ionizing radiation
measurements were carried out at 28 sites. Radiation and magnetic
susceptibility values were collected in and around the sites. As a result, it
was determined that all areas were safe from ionizing radiation.
Electromagnetic field strength values were above the safety limits at 20
locations, and magnetic susceptibility values were above the average rates at 21
sites. Besides geochemical analysis were carried out to determine the possible
heavy metals in the parks and their surroundings. The analysis were made for 33
different elements and it is determined that 21 of them are over the safety
limits.
