This study aims to define the financial variables that influence the current account
and tries to reveal the most significant variable. Granger casualty is applied and variance decomposition analysis are performed to develop a model with impulse response
functions. The study covers the period from 1980 to 2014. Such variables as economic
growth, real interest rate, real effective exchange rate, the ratio of external debt, the
money supply and the rate of inflation are determined. Consequently, in the light of
theoretical and empirical studies, the results of Granger causality test show that there
is a unidirectional causality between current account deficit, foreign debt ratio and the
exchange rate. The results of VAR model, on the other hand, reveal that the increase
in the current account deficit in the country is positively correlated with the increase of the external debt, inflation and real exchange rate. It is observed that the money
supply reduces the current account deficit. In addition, the long-term relationship between current account deficit and all the others factors is determined. The results of the
variance decomposition show that the current account deficit is most highly affected
by the high rate of current account deficit.
