toplumsal sorumluluk ekseninde ele alan Sosyal Bilgiler dersinin "çevre
projeleri tasarlanabilir.

From
a Sterile World to Natural Environments: Examining Environmental Awareness
Among Children Diagnosed with Leukemia from the Perspective of Social Studies
Education
Abstract
The purpose of this study is
to thoroughly assess the levels of environmental awareness among children
diagnosed with leukemia in terms of cognitive and affective dimensions and to
evaluate the findings in the context of Social Studies learning outcomes.
Uncovering the perceptions, knowledge, and attitudes toward the environment of
this vulnerable group which, due to their chronic illnesses, experiences
intensive sterilization and isolation processes is of great importance in terms
of the inclusivity of environmental education and the Social Studies
curriculum. In this regard, the study aims to diversify and enrich the
“environmental literacy” and “ecological citizenship” learning outcomes of the
Social Studies course, which addresses the individual’s relationship with the
environment through the lens of social responsibility.
In this study, which was
designed using a qualitative research paradigm, a case study design was adopted
to conduct an in-depth, purpose-driven investigation. The study group consisted
of 10 children aged 10–12 diagnosed with leukemia who were attending school in
the province of Izmir. For data collection, the researchers used a two-part
semi-structured interview form, structured from simple to complex and designed
to ensure logical and narrative coherence. The data, obtained through
one-on-one interviews lasting approximately 40 minutes, were analyzed using
content analysis after their validity was confirmed. During the analysis process,
the data were coded, thematic matrices were created, and the findings were
tabulated, supported by direct quotes from the participants.
The findings of the study
indicate that participants’ statements regarding environmental awareness fell
into two main categories: the “Cognitive Dimension” and the “Affective
Dimension.” Within the cognitive dimension, the following themes were identified:
Ecological Knowledge, Sustainability, Environment-Health Interaction, Natural
Heritage, and Civic Responsibility. It was determined that children possess
basic technical knowledge regarding environmental pollution and ecosystem
cycles, but experience some conceptual misunderstandings regarding the
classification of waste types. In contrast, in line with the active citizenship
objectives of the Social Studies course, they demonstrated a high level of
awareness regarding the vital impacts of waste separation. On the affective
level, the themes of Connection to Nature, Ecological Ethics, Environmental
Concern, Environmental Advocacy, and Experience-Based Environmentalism were
structured. It was determined that participants perceived nature as a “space of
freedom and healing” where they could escape hospital constraints and that they
developed a strong protective attitude toward it.
In conclusion, children
diagnosed with leukemia have internalized environmental awareness not merely as
theoretical knowledge, but as an integral part of their own struggle for life.
The need for a sterile environment due to their health conditions has shown
that these children have achieved the highest level of the social
responsibility and environmental literacy outcomes targeted in Social Studies
classes. In light of these findings, digital educational scenarios centered on
the theme of “different lives and the environment” which reflect these
children’s experiences and focus on empathy could be incorporated into the
environmental units of Social Studies curricula. Additionally, micro-level out
of school learning activities could be developed using “portable
mini-ecosystem/terrarium kits” that could be included as hands-on activities in
textbooks for students attending hospital schools or receiving home schooling.
At the educational policy level, social awareness projects with an
environmental theme could be designed within the Social Studies curriculum,
drawing on the unique experiences of children with chronic illnesses.
