Abstract

Louis Massignon (1883-1962) is an important orientalist who has worked especially on Hallaj and Islamic mysticism. The writings about him and his works have created a myth around Massignon. The aim of this article is not to examine his works, but rather to present a critical perspective on this myth. In this context, his life is mentioned briefly. Then, the reflections of his works on Islam are addressed and his place in the context of orientalism is emphasized. Finally, the influence of Massignon on Catholic-Muslim relations and on the documents such as Nostra Aetate and Lumen Gentium which talk about Muslims in the Second Vatican Council texts are discussed.
