TURK OFTALMOLOJI DERGISI-TURKISH JOURNAL OF OPHTHALMOLOGY, cilt.36, sa.3, ss.245-256, 2006 (ESCI)
Purpose: Evaluation of the results of Refractive Surgery Survey performed in 2004, in order to outline the preferences and thoughts of Turkish ophthalmologists in the area of refractive surgery. Material and Method: The survey was conducted by Turkish Ophthalmology Society during The April Course ve 38. National Congress in 2004. Ulusal Kongre sirasinda oftalmologlara anket dagitilmis ve sonuelari degerlendirilmistir. The survey included questions concerning the demographic characteristics of the ophthalmologists doing refractive surgery, their surgical techniques, instruments and devices, clinical approaches and complication rates. Each question is statistically analyzed on its own. Results: A total of 1000 survey form was delivered to the ophthalmologists; however, answers returned from 71 of them. Among the respondents, 32,4% was doing refractive surgery since 1-5 years, 26,8% was doing refractive surgery since 6-10 years. The most commonly performed refractive surgery procedures were LASIK, LASEK, PRK, refractive lens Exchange and radial keratotomy, in order of frequency. The most common complication encountered after LASIK was dry eye (40,8% of surgeons report 1-3 in month). 26,8% of the respondents reported pain complaint following LASEK from 21-25% of the patients; while, 72,1% of the respondents reported that LASEK technique is superior to PRK with respect to postoperative pain and visual recovery rate. LASIK was mostly recommended to -3,00 D and -7,00 D myopic 30 years old patients and +3,00 D hypermetropic 45 years old patients, phakic IOL implantation was mostly recommended to -12,00 D myopic 30 years old patients and refractive lens exchange was mostly recommended to +7,00 D ve +12,00 D 45 years old hypermetropic patients. Conclusion: Since most of the respondents in this survey are interested in refractive surgery only recently, it was concluded that there has been a rapid development in Turkey, in this field. Some of the refractive surgical techniques are rarely applied, and the refractive surgeons should be informed on these techniques. It was observed that interest on surveys and the habit to participate them are poor in Turkish Ophthalmology Society.
