Özet

This article explores Turkish university students' motivation and orientations toward learning English in a globalizing world. The study utilizes questionnaire responses and a focus group interview. Factor analysis of questionnaire data revealed three independent orientations, namely, Integration into International Community, Integration into L2 Community, and Academic Orientation. Students' main orientation for learning English was to find a well-paying job, and to stay connected to the rest of the world through media and foreign friends. The article argues that in this globalizing world, Turkish university students want to learn English in order to master a skill which is required to join the international labor market.
