Defibrilation and cardioversion is the technique of the passing a short burst of direct electric current across the thorax to terminate tachydysrhytmias. Ventricular tachydysrhytmias are the most common cause of sudden cardiac in adults and defibrilation is the most effective treatment for VT and VF. The success rate of electrical conversion of VF to an effective rhythm decreases rapidly over time. Automated external defibrilators (AED) are capable of interpreting the EKG rhythm of a patient, recognizing VT or VF and delivering appropriate shock. Because these devices can be operated with minimal training, EMT's first responders, even the lay public can use AED's and early defibrilation can be possible.
