Purpose: To evaluate the outcomes of penetrating keratoplasty in the pediatric age group. Method: Records of 17 eyes of 12 patients who had undergone penetrating keratoplasty at 14 years of age or younger betweeen February 1994 and January 2004, were reviewed retrospectively. Results: In total, 19 penetrating keratoplasties were performed on 17 eyes of 12 children. Mean age was 5.98 years (5 months to 14 years). Mean follow-up time was 21.71 +/- 18.47 months (6 to 75). Seven patients underwent unilateral, 5 patients underwent bilateral penetrating keratoplasty. 10 (58.82%) eyes had congenital corneal opacity, 7 eyes (41.18%) had acquired corneal opacity. Ten out of 17 eyes (58.82%) retained graft clarity. Conclusion: Although anatomic success can be achieved, amblyopia seems to be the major concern for the complete success after penetrating keratoplasty in children.
