In this study, the conceptual analysis and synthesis of hydrographs (CASH) model was used to analyse rainfall and runoff data from the Kocadere rural catchment. Initial default parameters were changed to optimize the model results. The root mean square error (RMSE, %) between observed and calculated runoff was compared to the model's sample test data. The RMSE of the model run (58(.)2%) was larger than the test data RMSE (6(.)6%) indicating that, although the fit was reasonable, the RMSE-criterion underestimated the quality of the simulation. This result may be due to the fact that small shifts in the timing cause large differences between observed and predicted runoff. However, the overall fit was good. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd.
