Intoxications are the third common cause of mortality In US and other countries as well. In 1995 approximately 2-4 billion intoxication cases and approximately 1 billion (1% of overall admissions) emergency service admissions were seen in US. Of these cases 215 000 patients were hospitalized and 18549 of them had fade away due to intoxications. According to reports of the American Association of Poison Control Centers in 2001, number of intoxications are increasing year by year. In 1983, 251.012 intoxication cases were noted in 16 centers in US. In 2001 this number was increased to 2.267.979 cases. Of the intoxication cases 66% were younger than 20 years. Especially 0-3 years of age were at greater risk. Although intoxications are common, life threatening and mortal intoxications are not common as much. Although it is more common in children and young adults, mortal intoxications are common between 20-60 years being more prominent in 40-49 age group. Analgesics are the most common ingested medication in all age groups. But cosmetics and self care products are the first leading cause in cases younger than 6 years of age. In adults 4.3% of intoxications are related to the cardiovascular drugs and the mortality rate is 0.28% (most common leading cause of death).
