In recent years, problems observed in available water quality data and shortcomings of current monitoring networks have led designers and researchers to focus more critically on the design procedures used. Eventually, most countries have started to assess and redesign their monitoring programs. The major problem here is the lack of universally confirmed guidelines to be followed in the redesign process. The paper presented focuses on basic requirements for network improvement and addresses questions to be raised when initiating the network redesign process.
