An Ion Chromatography Method for the Determination of Major Anions In Geothermal Water Samples

A single-column suppressed ion chromatography technique was employed for the simultaneous determination of major and trace anions in sulfaterich groundwater samples. An analytical column, a self regenerating suppressor and sodium carbonate as the eluent were used to separate the anions. Method detection limits for the anions of interest were 10.4, 15.9, 36.8, 62, 60, 61 and 67 mu g l-1 for F-, Cl-, NO(2)-, Br-, NO(3)-, PO(4)3- and SO(4)2- respectively. The precision of the method was tested at five different concentration levels for each anion reference sample to evaluate the effectiveness of the method for groundwater analysis. Recovery studies were performed between two successive months by adding reference samples to the geothermal groundwater and drinking water samples. Precision was also assessed as the relative standard deviation of both repeatability (within-day) and reproducibility (between-day and different concentrations) for groundwater samples. Standard deviation and RSD values of 220 groundwater samples acquired over 8 months were evaluated. The suppressed ion chromatography technique was found to be a suitable method for determining major anions in sulfate-rich geothermal water samples.La technique de separation par chromatographie ionique sur une seule colonne a ete employee pour la determination simultanee des anions majeurs et traces dans des echantillons d'eaux souterraines riches en sulfates. Une colonne analytique, un suppresseur auto regenerant et le carbonate de sodium utilise comme eluent ont ete utilises pour separer les anions. Les limites de detection pour les anions d'interet etaient 10.4, 15.9, 36.8, 62, 60, 61 et 67 mu g l-1 pour respectivement F-, Cl-, NO(2)-, Br- NO(3)-, PO(4)3- et SO(4)2-. La precision de la methode a ete testee a cinq niveaux de concentration differents pour chaque anion d'echantillons de reference afin d'evaluer l'efficacite de la methode pour l'analyse des eaux souterraines. Des etudes de recouvrement ont ete effectuees entre deux mois consecutifs en ajoutant des echantillons de reference aux echantillons d'eaux souterraines geothermiques et d'eau potable. La precision a egalement ete evaluee comme etant l'ecart type relatif a la fois de la repetabilite (dans la journee) et de la reproductibilite (d'un jour a l'autre et pour des concentrations differentes) pour les echantillons d'eau souterraine. L'ecart-type et les valeurs RSD de 220 echantillons d'eau souterraine acquis sur plus de 8 mois ont ete evalues. La technique de separation par chromatographie ionique a ete jugee etre une methode appropriee pour determiner les principaux anions des echantillons d'eau geothermique riches en sulfate.
