Abstract

Cleaning procedures were carried out on the Lalapaşa Mosque tiles. The petrographical, mineralogical and chemical characterisation of the Lalapaşa Mosque tiles are accomplished and the characteristics are compared with those of the ̇Iznik tiles. The petrographical studies show that quartz is the main mineral. Plagioclase, lamprobolite (amphibole) and chlorite are the other minerals. According to XRD studies on the tile bodies, quartz is the main mineral phase; pyroxene and tridymite (a high temperature polymorph of quartz) are the other minerals. Results of the wet chemical analysis of the tile body yield values of about 90 wt% SiO2 and concentrations value of lead, so Lalapaşa Mosque tiles show similarity with typical 16th century ̇Iznik tiles.
