Ulva lactuca (L.) is a marine seaweed which is widely distributed in all marine ecosystems. However, it is one of the algae which increases its biomass in large amounts from polluted areas. The present study reveals an alternative utilisation method for this species. Its extract is proposed as a source for synthesizing silver nanoparticles (AgNP) and the synthesized AgNP is used for production of hydrogen via decomposition of ammonium borane as the substrate. 52.4 mL of hydrogen gas was generated under optimal conditions: 50 °C, pH 11, 150 mM NH3BH3, and 4 mM AgNO3. The activation energy (Ea) for the U. lactuca-catalyzed NH3BH3 hydrolysis reaction was determined to be 44.3 kJ/mol. Experimental optimization results were effectively modeled using an artificial neural network. Consequently, the produced hydrogen could serve as an important energy source for vehicles of the near future.
