(PROFESSIONS RELATED TO LEATHER IN ANATOLIAN SELJUK EMPIRE)

Being advanced in leather, the Turks settled in Anatolia with the migration
of tribes after the 10th century. The existence of famous philosophers, scientists
and artists such as Mevlana, Hacı Bektaşi Veli, Yunus Emre, Ahi Evren grew up in
Horasan and the delicate approach of Seljukians towards science, art and trade
became the proof of Turks living in an advanced civilisation during the Anatolian
Seljuk Empire. Rich leather culture remains of Phrygians, Hellenes and Byzantines
were blended with Middle Asian knowledge and thus, within an environment where
art and trade were promoted, the art of leather was also improved.
The best and most reliable written sources on the art of leather in
Seljukians are The Travels of Ibn Battuta and the sources on Ahi- Order
Organisation. By studying these sources, it has been learned that there was a brisk
trade on leather goods in Anatolian Seljuk. From the reliefs, porcelain, ceramic,
miniature and metal artworks, it is seen that leather was frequently used in clothes
and accessories and horse harnesses. It is seen that leather shoes, boots, bags,
belts and harnesses were the highest demanded products to sell in the bazaars set
up in various Anatolian towns. Leather was one of the main consumer materials of
Anatolian Seljuk and shoe-making, tanning, furriery, saddle making, saddlery and
bookbinding were profession fields which also worked together with other
professions.
