Özet
It is well established that cancer cells manage the process of carcinogenesis by possessing many properties. Among these features is the ability to roughly avoid cell death. Under normal conditions, agents or methods used in the treatment of cancer are effective by inducing cell death mechanisms such as apoptosis, autophagy, and necrosis in cancer cells. In other words, autophagy, which is one of the strategies to avoid or resist cell death in the process of carcinogenesis, is actually a form of cell death. Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved survival system. For this reason, autophagy is a key target mechanism in cancer, both in cancer development and in cancer treatment by driving the cancer cell to death.
In addition, it is known that in cancerous cells, apart from genetic causes, some molecular effects, i.e., epigenetic mechanisms, are involved in the carcinogenesis process without mutations. Epigenetic mechanisms include methylation of DNA and RNA, histone acetylation, and noncoding RNAs. Among these, our knowledge of short and long noncoding RNA types and mechanisms of carcinogenesis is still at a certain level, and research is ongoing. Phenotypic plasticity, which is similar to the mechanisms involved in the wound healing process, as well as senescent cells and microbiota change, are other new mechanisms involved in carcinogenesis.
