Özet

The aim of this study is, to look at the effects of pentoxifylline on the oxygenation index, oxygen consumption and hemodynamic parameters in patients with trauma at a multidisciplinary intensive care unit. All the patients had trauma prior to surgery. According to randomized sequence, the patients either received pentoxifylline (1 mg/kg IV) followed by an infusion of 1.5 mg/kg/hour for 2 days (n=7) or saline solution as placebo (n=7). All the patients were ventilated mechanically. Oxygenation index, hemodynamic parameters, DO2, VO2, were comparable between both groups. An average dose of 2.24 g/day of pentoxifylline (range 2.0-2.6) was infused in to the pentoxifylline-treated group. After 24 hours PVR was reduced in the pentoxifylline group whereas no difference was seen between other parameters. Pentoxifylline was well tolerated by all seven patients with no adverse effects. In this study we could show that pentoxifylline has no grave effect on hemodynamics in trauma patients but further studies are needed to determine if pentoxifylline will improve outcome.
