Although the science of Forensic Medicine was included in the Code of Hammurabi in the 18th century BC, it was only
included in the education programme of 1839 in Turkey.
For the continuation of forensic medicine education and services in Turkey today, it is possible to talk about three basic
pillars. These are:
1. The Council of Forensic Medicine providing services under the Ministry of Justice
2. Departments of forensic medicine and institutions serving in universities
3. The judiciary, providing services in central and provincial organizations affiliated with the Ministry of Health Medical
Polyclinics.
The founding purposes of the Society of Forensic Medicine Specialists, which was established in 1992, are “to ensure
social and scientific solidarity among forensic medicine experts and their assistants, to protect their rights and interests, to
monitor national and international scientific studies and research in the field of forensic medicine, to establish a high
standard in forensic medicine and sciences.”
