Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disorder of the exocrine glands with associated lymphocytic infiltrates of the affected glands which is the lacrimal and salivary gland. pSS is considered to be a multifactorial disease, where underlying genetic predisposition, epigenetic mechanisms and environmental factors contribute to disease development. The epidemiological studies of pSS in the general population yielded highly heterogeneous results, probably because of differences in diagnostic criteria and study design.
